Governor Gavin Newsom has vetoed AB 2253, that would have made the recycling of materials more difficult and costly for California’s food and ag industries.

Western United Dairies joined a broad coalition of agricultural and food organizations urging the Governor to veto the bill. The coalition raised concerns that AB 2253 would restrict legitimate recycling accounting methods, increase the cost of food-grade packaging, and add another layer of California-specific compliance for businesses already working to meet the state’s recycling requirements.

Anja Raudabaugh discussed AB 2253 earlier this month on the Seen & Herd podcast as WUD prepared to request the Governor’s veto. With the Governor’s action this weekend, the bill will not become law.
